WONDERFUL SUMMER FOOD!
---------------------------------------------
Last month, we talked about liquid refreshment. Now we would like to discuss its partner - food, glorious food!

Remember the television ad campaign several years back, "Summer summer fruits - it wouldn't be summer without them."? It's true, isn't it? But there's a lot more to summer enjoyment as well - vacations, cook-outs, picnics, parties... How do you stay healthy when you don't have as much control over your food selections?

We've compiled a few articles to help you get through the rest of the summer, with fun, style, and health too.

    Healthy Eating at Summertime Shindigs
    -------------------------------------------------------
With all the fun you're going to have this summer, please try to stay healthy by eating right, even when faced with temptation. We know you will probably be offered Cousin Gertrude's famous chocolate fudge cake at that reunion. And, of course, your Uncle Milton makes the juiciest grilled steaks at his backyard barbecue. And how about those ice-cold soda pops in the cooler at the beach party? How do you overcome these temptations? To tell you the truth, it's easy. That's right! You just need some strategies -- be prepared. Here are some suggestions.,,

VEGE VILLAGE
----------------------
And while we're on the subject of healthy eating out, we've discovered a restaurant where ALL the menu choices are not only wonderfully tasty, but healthy too! And we're privileged to have this wonderful dining establishment right in our own back yard (well, practically).

Vege Village offers a large menu selection of some of the best Chinese food we've ever tasted. The ambience is casual but nice, and the prices are very reasonable.

Here's what proprietors Juliana and Jeffrey have to say about their establishment:

"Good health - great taste. Eat heart-healthy food without the meat but with all the flavor.

"Meals without meat are catching on in America, and with good reason. People across the country are aware that those who eat more fruits, legumes, and whole grain breads and cereals are less likely to develop cancer and other health problems.

"Vege Village Restaurant is the best choice whether you are vegetarian or not. You will enjoy this vegetarian food."

They are certainly right!

Vege Village is located at 18350 Sonoma Highway 12, Boyes Hot Springs, California (in the San Francisco Bay Area, just north of the town of Sonoma, near the famous Sonoma Mission Inn). Their phone number is (707) 939-8383. They do deliver (to a limited area, of course).

So when you come to visit California's beautiful Wine Country, you must stop by for a delicious and healthy meal (we highly suggest you try Juliana's fresh basil mushrooms - makes our mouths water just thinking about them!).

HEALTHY PERSPECTIVE IN THE NEWS
----------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Don't Worry, Be Happy - And Get Fewer Colds!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
ABC News reported on July 22, "People who are energetic, happy and relaxed are less likely to catch a cold than those who are depressed, nervous or angry," according to a study published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine.

Healthy volunteers were asked to assess their emotions, then were given a nasal squirt of a foul cold-causing germ known as rhinovirus.

"We found that people who regularly experience positive emotions, when exposed to rhinovirus, are relatively protected from developing illness," said Dr. Sheldon Cohen, lead author of the study and a psychology professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

"It's like a drug that is released by your state of mind and simply changing the state of mind can produce effects on the rest of the body through the nervous system and hormones," said Dr. Neil Shulman, associate professor of medicine at Emory University School of Medicine and author of Doc Hollywood. "Your chance of developing the common cold, pneumonia, or even cancer may very well be decreased by keeping your brain in a healthy state."

And, according to Dr. Cohen, not only do happy people get sick less often, but they don't suffer as severely when they do!

These results really shouldn't surprise us. Here are a few scriptures that have been telling us this for a long time.

"A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit."
     Prov. 15:13 (NIV)

"...Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.'"
     Neh. 8:10 b (NIV)

"Unless the Lord had given me help, I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death. When I said, 'My foot is slipping,' your love, O Lord, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul."
     Ps. 94:17-19 (NIV)

"A cheerful heart is good medicine..."
     Prov. 17:22 a (NIV)

"Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?"
     Matt. 6:27 (NIV)

"Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well."
     3John 2 (NIV)

Depression Causes Brittle Bones
-----------------------------------------------
On the flip side of the above news piece, ABC News reported on January 13 that a study links depression to bone loss.

The article explains, "Depression is like a severe and prolonged state of stress. It causes blood pressure and the heart rate to increase. It also causes the brain to produce dangerously high levels of hormones."

"The brain really controls the hormones in the bloodstream," explained [Dr. Philip] Gold. "The brain speaks to the body through hormones, and that is how the brain induces bone loss and other medical problems in patients who are depressed."

Depression in men seems to cause bone loss at an even greater rate than that in depressed women, but as men have a higher bone density to begin with, women are impacted more severely with resulting bone fractures.

The ABC article states, "Researchers at the National Institutes of Health estimate that at least 400,000 women in the United States, women in their 30s and 40s, already have brittle bones as a result of depression and don't even know it."

You may read this article at http://abcnews.go.com/sections/wnt/DailyNews/depression_osteoporosis030113.html.

Again, listen to what the Bible has to say:

"A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones."
     Prov. 17:22 (NIV)

"A cheerful look brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones.
     Prov. 15:30 (NIV)

Words of Jesus:
"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." John 16:33 (NIV)
