ON A PERSONAL NOTE
----------------------------------
Summer is here and good things are happening!

We love summer, with its long, warm days; sultry nights; wonderful fresh produce; happy children; a plethora of activities and events; and so much more.

On a personal note, our summer has begun well. We were able to spend Father's Day and Clarence's birthday with oldest son, Mike. We are proud of Mike's dedication to his vegetarian diet. He and his friend, John, took us out for some great vegetarian meals. Thanks, guys - we love you!

We also were blessed to attend a "Rich Dad" seminar. Robert Kiyosaki and his "advisors" ( Dolf de Roos, Michael Lechter, Diane Kennedy,Garrett Sutton, Blair Singer, and David Novac) - all in one program! Wow!
[To check out some of this good info for yourself, go to http://www.healthyperspective.com/richdad.html.]

We've also seen prayers answered. Our dear friend, Sandy, gave birth to a tiny baby girl in March. Susan Kaylin weighed only 14 ounces (that's right - less than a pound!) at her very premature birth. Against all odds (and with much prayer!) this little one is growing and flourishing. At this writing, today she finally comes home from the hospital! Congratulations to Mommy Sandy and welcome home little Susan!

THE MATTHEW MANNING STORY
-------------------------------------------------
We hope you saw the Matthew Manning Story on the 700 Club on Wednesday, June 26. What a miracle!

Matthew, who is a friend of a friend of Nicole, sat in our living room a couple of years ago and told us of his miraculous recovery from end-stage AIDS (literally on his death bed) to a healthy man who now tests HIV-negative! We were thrilled to see his story being told to the nation on television. We were also thrilled to hear that Matt and his wife, Krista, are expecting their first baby in August - another miracle!

If you could use a faith booster, check out Matt's true life story at http://www.cbn.org/700club/features/Matthew_Manning.asp. You may also check out Matthew's site directly at http://www.matthewcmanning.com/.

HEART HEALTH
------------------------
-----------------
Hidden Risks
-----------------
Dr. Reginald Cherry, on a recent airing of his show, "The Doctor and the Word," stated that 60 percent of all first heart attack sufferers had never had a symptom before the attack! Dr. Cherry quoted the "Harvard Health Letter," saying,

"..Traditionally, cardiologists have assumed that a person's chance of having a heart attack increases if they have severe blockage in their arteries: the larger the blockage, the greater the risk. Over the past decade, results of several scientific studies have challenged this belief and demonstrated that, in fact, most of the dangerous blockages are not the largest... Surprisingly the average stenosis (narrowing) that caused the heart attack is 50 percent or less of the artery's diameter. Those of 70 percent or greater didn't cause any heart problems."

[You may read more on the subject of understanding heart disease on Dr. Cherry's web site at http://www.drcherry.org/apr_1_2002.htm]

This new information makes it clear that all of us need to be aware of our cardio health, even if we have none of the traditional symptoms or warning signs.

Solutions
-------------
Three ways we can help ensure good heart health are to control our blood cholesterol levels, our homocysteine levels, and our blood pressure.

------------------
Cholesterol
------------------
Dr. Cherry suggests three natural substances to help control blood cholesterol levels:

-Policosanol
This is a natural substance, derived from the waxy coating of sugar cane. Dr. Cherry says policosanol has been shown to be as effective as prescription (statin) drugs in lowering blood cholesterol - improving blood cholesterol levels by as much as 40 percent!
[You can find policosanol at your local health food store.]

-Tocotrienols
Tocotrienols are a type of vitamin E. They are found in cereal seeds and in palm, rice bran, and barley oils. Like vitamin E, tocotrienols are proving to have health benefits. There have been many different studies indicating that tocotrienols reduce serum cholesterol, and recent research by Packer and Associates (Lester Packer is a well-known nutritional biochemist) indicates that tocotrienols have 40 to 60 times more antioxidant ability than alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E).
[A good supplement containing tocotrienols is AIM CellSparc 360 (tm). For more information on this product, go to http://www.healthyperspective.com/cellsparc360.html.]

-Garlic
We use alpine wild garlic (AIM Bear Paw Garlic). This is a unique product, as the active substances of this supplement are found in the green leaves of the plant.
[For more information on this supplement, go to http://www.healthyperspective.com/bearpawgarlic.html.]

--------------------
Homocysteine
--------------------
To control homocysteine levels, make sure you have an adequate dietary intake of the B vitamins, especially vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid.

According to the USDA, foods high in vitamin B6 include cereals, garbanzo beans, tomatoes, bananas, potatoes, buckwheat, and rice.

According to the USDA, some whole grain breads, such as cracked wheat and oatmeal, contain small amounts of vitamin B12. Tempeh, a soy food, is a good vegetarian source of vitamin B12, as is AIM Barleygreen (tm).
[For more information on Barleygreen, go to http://www.healthyperspective.com/barleygreen.html.]

Sources of folic acid, according to the USDA, include rice, lentils, pinto beans, orange juice, spinach and other leafy greens, asparagus, okra, black beans, kidney beans, and navy beans.

----------------------
Blood Pressure
----------------------
Dr. Cherry also has recommendations for controlling blood pressure.

He cites a study from the University of Florida which showed that natural compounds found in purple grape juice can dilate the arteries and lower blood pressure! Grape seed extract can also do this.
[For information on an excellent supplement containing grape seed extract, go to http://www.healthyperspective.com/proancynol.html.]

According to a University of Chicago study cited by Dr. Cherry, eating two to three stalks of celery a day can be the equivalent to taking a calcium channel blocker and can substantially lower blood pressure!

And according to a Johns Hopkins study: eating even small amounts of oatmeal (one to two ounces), can lower blood pressure.

High dietary intakes of calcium, magnesium, and vitamin c are also recommended for keeping blood pressure under control.

----------------
The Answer
----------------
Leviticus 3:17 states,
"This is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, wherever you live: You must not eat any fat or any blood."
[NIV]

Dr. Cherry commenting on Lev. 3:17:
"That is an amazing scripture because it brings us right up to today - to what is killing us... When you really do the exegesis of that scripture - the root meaning of it - you see that God was referring to saturated fat, fats that were of animal origin... as opposed to monounsaturated fats... that come from olives and things like that which actually lower cholesterol levels. So God had this whole model in mind and modern medicine is once again catching up with this model."

Indeed, God does have all the answers.

--------------------------------
THE FOOD INDUSTRY
--------------------------------
Paul Zane Pilzer, economist, multimillionaire entrepreneur, lay rabbi, and best-selling author, was on the 700 Club on June 25, talking about his new book, "The Wellness Revolution." Pilzer says that the number one problem in America today is health. Sixty-one percent of Americans are overweight, with twenty-seven percent (77 million people) clinically obese. Twenty years ago the numbers were less than half that.

Pilzer contends that this is really an economic problem. We have a 1 trillion dollar food industry in the United States, with 960 billion dollars being paid to packaged food and fast food companies. Pilzer has some strong words about the food industry:

"The food companies today are primarily owned by the tobacco companies. And they make addictive processed foods. They study every one of their existing customers and say, 'How can I get them to consume more?' The fast food restaurants know that if you're overweight you consume 50 percent more at the cash register.... You have a favorite Christian singer and all of a sudden you feel good about a certain addictive fast food. Guess who sang the commercial that's in the back of your mind when you go to buy it at the checkout counter? They study Americans like rats [in a laboratory] to increase consumption of their food products, and in doing so have more than doubled obesity and overweight in the United States."

Pilzer continues:
"The problem is that the food industry controls, in effect, our television. Look at most commercials today for television shows - food companies. And they try to get their consumers to eat more and more of their existing foods. As the food industry focuses on those who are overweight, they make them more and more overweight. And then when someone says, 'I want to lose weight; I want to get healthy,' they get misinformation out there because they've got this industry that controls our media that is constantly saying, 'how do I get you to eat more food?'"

Sadly, it makes sense, doesn't it? It's terrible to think that, for the love of money, this 960 billion dollar industry would have us be overweight, therefore unhealthy, unhappy, and doomed to disease and early death. Fortunately, we don't have to be laboratory rats! And, thank God, we can get access to good health information. (And we strive to bring you just that!)

God bless you.
