The key to success, say experts, is to incorporate healthy decisions into daily life. A CNN.com article, written by Amy Cox, posted Jan. 2, 2003, gives some simple strategies to help you achieve health goals: [ http://www.cnn.com/2003/HEALTH/01/01/new.years.health/index.html] "Start your day with a good, healthy breakfast." Susan Moores, registered dietician and spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, says, "Studies have shown people who eat breakfast have better health, and manage their overall diets better than those who don't." "Throw color at your meals." Moores notes that we need more fruits and vegetables in our diets, and these foods contain bright colors. For instance, Moores explains, breakfast can be a very brown meal. But adding fresh fruit such as oranges, pineapple, apples, etc. adds color as well as vital nutrients to your breakfast plate. "If you have to eat fast food, make healthy choices." Of course, avoid fast food restaurants whenever possible. But if you find yourself at one of these establishments, Dr. Howard Eisenson, director of the Duke University Diet and Fitness Center, warns, "Never say 'Biggie-size' anything!" Eat the basic size and wait a bit and you'll find that you're full." Dr. Eisenson also suggests making sure you keep healthy snacks readily available (fresh fruits and veggies). This way, your hunger won't get out of control. Our Nicole has a good recommendation for eating at fast food places. If nothing else, order a "hamburger, hold the hamburger!" You'll get a vegetable sandwich (lettuce, tomato, onion, maybe even mushrooms). For more eating out tips, go to http://www.healthyperspective.com/yhparchivevol9.html, and read the article entitled, "Tips for Healthy Eating at Restaurants." "Drink beverages that are good for you at meals." That's a good place to start. We would add, drink beverages that are good for you - period! In the article mentioned in the above strategy (Tips for Healthy Eating at Restaurants), we quote one of our favorite authors and speakers, Frances Hunter. She says, "God created water and no one has ever improved on it!" Juices can be a healthy choice as well. But make sure it's "real" juice, not water with sugar and artificial colors and flavors! Vegetable juices are wonderful too. The best are those that are "raw" (unpasturized and uncooked). You may make your own or buy juices from your health food store's refrigerated section. Another great option (saves time too) is a healthy vegetable juice powder you can add to water or your favorite fruit juice. Find a brand that contains enzymes. We like AIM BarleyLife (tm) and AIM RediBeets (tm) and Just Carrots (tm). For more info on these products, go to http://www.healthyperspective.com/AIM.html. (Note: all three of these products are in AIM's Garden Trio - a great value). Herbal tea is another healthy choice. Another great choice is soy (or almond, or cashew or rice) "milk." There are some brands on the market now that actually taste good - we enjoy White Wave Silk (tm). Wildwood Farms (tm) makes a good tasting soy milk as well. And please don't drink soft drinks. Did you know that "diet" soft drinks can actually contribute to weight gain?! And, of course, you know the sugary versions are bad for you. If you need more information to help get you off this addictive bad habit, go to http://www.healthyperspective.com/yhparchivevol11.html. "If you smoke, stop. And if you don't, don't start!" "Get active, even if it's only a little physical activity each day." Here's a great suggestion from Dr. Eisenson: Have small meetings while taking a walk, instead of sitting over coffee or in someone's office. Whatever your healthy resolutions are, we wish you health, happiness and prosperity in this new year! Here's some more great advice from the CNN article: "If your goal of getting healthy gets off-track through the year, begin fresh the next day... It's never to late to start." --------------------------------------------- DR. SWOPE'S TIMELESS TRUTHS --------------------------------------------- This week we had the privilege of hearing Dr. Mary Ruth Swope lecture on "Timeless Truths in Nutrition." The AIM Company regularly sponsors "telecourses" (telephone classes) free of charge to AIM members on the subjects of nutrition and business. * Dr. Swope is a favorite of ours. She is the author of "Green Leaves of Barley," "Some Gold Nuggets in Nutrition," "Lifelong Health," "Nutrition for Christians," and "Hearing from God." [You can find all these books at Alibris. Go to http://www.healthyperspective.com/discountscurrent.html and click on one of the links under "Alibris Books - The "Get free shipping on books at Alibris" is a good one!]. Dr. Swope has a new book out too, "The Roots and Fruits of Fasting." This book may be obtained through Dr. Swope at 800-447-9772. Below are a few of Dr. Swope's "truths." Life is energy of different wave lengths and frequencies and death is the absence of energy. Our life energy is electricity, which is supplied to us in food. The cells in the body of a healthy person measure 70 to 90 millivolts. It is estimated that people in America run on about half that. Optimize your energy intake and you'll optimize your health. Energy content of food: Grains, seeds, nuts and legumes: approx. 7,000 - 8,000 angstroms (a unit of electrical energy) Vegetables: approx. 6,000 angstroms Fruits: approx. 5,000 to 6,000 angstroms Cancer lives in low voltage cells. It's easy to see which foods we should be choosing! One more thought from Dr. Swope: Live food makes live people. Dead food makes dead people. (Live food is unprocessed, unadulterated, enzyme filled food as God has provided for us. For instance, if you drop an apple in the ground, it has the capability to cause an apple tree to grow and make more apples - it's alive!) She shared much more with us as well. Perhaps we'll share more with you later as time and space permit. -------------------- * NOTE: Being an AIM Member has many advantages, access to AIM's educational resources, such as their telecourses, being one. Having access to some of the best whole food supplements on the market - at wholesale prices - is what got us started. You may use your membership simply to get your own products and take advantage of the resources. Or, if you're so inclined, AIM has a wonderful network marketing opportunity as well (great money making potential). Whichever you choose, the AIM Company supports your choices and helps. We, at Healthy Perspective.com, have an additional advantage - we are in Dr. Mary Ruth Swope's "downline." This means her nutritional and business expertise is at our disposal as well (what a blessing!). And if you sign up through Healthy Perspective.com, you will be part of this "family" as well! And here's a deal: if you purchase 50 BVP worth of AIM products your AIM Membership can be free! (For an explanation of BVP, go to http://www.healthyperspective.com/bvp.html.) ----------------------------------------------------- HEALTHY PERSPECTIVE IN THE NEWS ----------------------------------------------------- Another of our favorite people is Paul Harvey. Perhaps you caught him on "Larry King Live" recently. Included below are several interesting health news items from Paul Harvey's noon broadcasts of January 27 and 28, 2003. --------------------------- Your Back Likes Bach --------------------------- An Austrian survey of people with herniated discs found a combination of music and relaxation significantly reduced lower back pain. Baroque sonata, soft ballad and quiet waltzes were especially effective. Put up your feet and turn on your stereo! ------------------------- Sleep for Your Heart ------------------------- The Archives of Internal Medicine reported a sleep study of 72,000 female nurses. It was found that the risk of developing heart disease is increased if you don't get enough sleep or if you sleep too much! According to the study, five to six hours is not enough and nine to ten hours is too much. One in three Americans do not get enough sleep. --------------------------------- Monkey Think, Monkey Do --------------------------------- According to New Scientist Magazine, and confirmed by research at Kyoto University in Japan, chimpanzees have learned which poisonous leaves they can swallow, in just the right quantity, to induce diarrhea in order to get rid of tape worms and other parasites. They have also learned that poisonous plants may be consumed for food if they first eat soil, which soaks up and neutralizes the toxins. And primates in Madagascar have learned, when pregnant, to eat poisonous tanins in just the right amount to prevent miscarriage and to stimulate milk production after birth. Thirty-nine species have been observed medicating themselves in ways handed down by their parents and their parents' parents. As Paul Harvey stated, "They're not as smart in all things as we are but in some things they have been learning longer." ----------- If you miss a Paul Harvey radio broadcast, you may listen over the internet at http://www.paulharvey.com. ------------------------- HEALTHY RECIPE ------------------------- * Muffalletta and Angel Hair * This is almost a "cheat" recipe - it's too easy. And it's so good! When I recently served this to my mother, she said, "This is the best pasta you've ever made!" I wasn't sure whether to be happy or insulted (you'll see what I mean when you read the ingredients and directions!). Ingredients: -One 16 oz. package angel hair pasta -One 16 oz. jar Muffalletta -Bragg Liquid Aminos (tm) or sea salt to taste Directions: Cook angel hair pasta according to directions. Drain. Pour in Muffalletta. Toss. Add Bragg Aminos or sea salt to taste. Yum! This may be served as a hot dish or chilled and served as pasta salad. If angel hair isn't your pasta of choice, substitute your favorite. Okay, so what's Muffalletta and where do I get it?! It's a Mediterranean culinary delight, made with olives (and healthy too). We found it, reasonably priced, at the Vermont Country Store. You may find it there too, online. ![]() Muffalletta: for Sandwiches, Dips, Pasta...
